La Peña presents “Dream Carvers” an exhibition of artwork by fourth grade students from Sanchez Elementary. It opens with a reception on Friday, April 25 from 4:30 – 6:00 pm at Las Manitas Avenue Café with performances by the Sanchez Elementary Choir and Roy Lozano’s Ballet Folklorico. For “Dream Carvers” the fourth graders of Sanchez Elementary have created tin reliefs featuring colorful animals based on Oaxacan wood carvings. Their art teacher Jennifer Gonzalez told them the story from the book “Dream Carver” by Diana Cohn and Amy Cardova. It is about a boy who followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather and created tiny wood carved animals. However, he wanted to do more, broke with tradition, and started to create large, brightly colored animals unlike anything that had been seen before. Inspired by the story of the young boy, the students have created their own colorful, dream-like animals. However, instead of carving them from wood, they have carved into tin to bring us their visions. The participating students are: |
