Trio Romantico and Albert "Tiger" Diaz
performing at Las Manitas Avenue Cafe
on Sunday, October 31, 2004, 6-10 pm
$5 admission, children under 12 free

On Halloween night La Peña presents a night of music, food, and drinks with Trio Romantico and Albert "Tiger" Diaz at Las Manitas Avenue Café. Trio Romantico is made up of Manuel "Cowboy" Donley, Jorge Tomayo, and Alejandro Diaz, Jr. The music begins at 6 pm and tickets are $5 per person with children under 12 getting in free. Since it's Halloween, everyone is encouraged to come in costume and enjoy the spirit of the night.

Manuel "Cowboy" Donley is the Grandfather of true Texas Tejano. Manuel Donley led a big band Latin orchestra in the 1950s and picked up his nickname by stepping out from behind the podium and carrying his guitar to the front of the stage like the cowboys. In the 50s and 60s, Donley played on 6th Street, along with other musicians producing what he called, " songs, beautiful songs, and good, heavy, original sounds." Now he is greeted as "Maestro" by those who remember when 6th Street was Mexican. Donley formed Los Heartbreakers, the first Mexican-American band to play rock & roll and rhythm & blues in Austin. In 1955 he formed his own orchestra, Las Estrellas, to play the orchestra music of the 1940s that he loved. Even at 70, he's still ready to kick it into high gear.

For Albert "Tiger" Diaz, making a comeback in the nineties with his CD "Cambiame" meant rebelling against the trends started by his former group, La Sombra. Tiger's sound is modern and urban, but it's not techno or synthesized. Diaz is a veteran of the business.   He played trumpet for La Sombra from 1984-89 and has cut five solo albums since then. Born in Port Lavaca, Texas, he's now a San Antonio resident.

For Alejandro Diaz, Jr. music has been a lifelong passion every since his parents put a guitar in his lap when he was a baby. He formed his first band "Los "Emeralds" in high school where he was the lead singer. In 1991, he decided to become a professional guitarist and went off to San Antonio where he worked with many different people, including Albert "Tiger" Diaz. Alejandro's creative passion also lies in his artwork. In August 2004, he had an exhibition of his iron creations and mirror mosaics called "Hierro Mohoso" at La Peña Gallery.

It was during the opening of "Hierro Mohoso" that Trio Romantico and Albert "Tiger" Diaz performed at La Peña. On one of the biggest party nights of the year, they're ready to do it again at Las Manitas Avenue Cafe, right in the heart of downtown Austin.
