Loteria
by 4th grade students of Sanchez Elelmentary under the direction of art teacher Lynn Bryant
Exhibit: April 1- May 3, 2004
at Las Manitas Avenue Cafe, 211 Congress Avenue, Austin, TX 78701
Reception: Friday, April 16, 2004, 4:30 pm - 6:30 pm

For more than a decade, La Peña and Sanchez Elementary have worked together to put on exhibits of the children's artwork. Under the direction of art teacher Lynn Bryant, the students of Sanchez began creating the popular "Mascaras de los Dioses Aztecas" (Aztec God Masks) in 1990. Last year, the fifth grade students had an exhibit at Las Manitas Avenue Café that featured sculpted clay suns inspired by the Mexican Folk art. This year, La Peña is proud to work with Sanchez Elementary once again to present Loteria during the month of April. Based on the popular Mexican card game, the children have created their own renditions such as "El Sol", "La Luna", "El Niñito", and "El Planto Macho".

La Peña would like to thank Lynn Bryant for her years of dedication to her students. Her nurturing, creative, and sensitive approach to art education has helped to distinguish Sánchez Elementary as the official school of the Austin American Statesman Adopt-a-School program.
