"Abundance" by Magda Bowen

Magda Bowen is an artist who was born in Chihuahua, Mexico, received an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Commercial Art, and is currently residing in Fort Worth, Texas. Memories of growing up with her grandmother built her inspiration to paint. Her family lived in a small one bedroom apartment. It was there that she learned a lot about family and togetherness. Her stay there was short but it left her with beautiful memories that move her to paint.

In 1996, she began to work with acrylic on canvas. Her paintings are not exact scenes of her childhood. They are compositions of color and strokes of paint that represent emotions through her experiences. Painting is a very personal way of expression for her. She says she feels vulnerable when she exhibits her work because she is sharing her anger, fear and passion with strangers. Then all her insecurities are put aside in the hope that the people viewing her artwork are able to find a common ground with her. She wants her paintings to touch people. She states, "Painting is a basic way of being since you don't have to speak the same language. It is is an expression of the soul and true communication with no barriers."

Her grandmother is her biggest inspiration. Bowen paints to celebrate her heritage. "I embrace all good and bad in life which in turn enables me to create beautiful pictures."

La Peña Gallery will be displaying these expressions of Human Nature beginning on July 5 th and will run through August 5 th . For this exhibition, Magda has chosen 16 acrylic paintings which feature portraits of women. The reception will be taking place on Friday, July 9 th from 6-8 pm.
