Roy Salas was born and raised in Austin, Texas. After high school, he completed two years of Commercial Art Study at Austin Community College before transferring to North Texas State University in Denton, Texas where he received a BFA in Advertising Art. Since returning to Austin, he has worked as a graphic artist for the State Treasury Department and the Governor’s Office during the governorship of Ann Richards and has also worked at various print shops around the Austin area. Roy’s passion for drawing was sparkled at the age of six when he attended an art workshop for teens and adults. He was in awe of the artists’ abilities as he had the opportunity to watch as they created. The inspiration he received from that experience never left him. Afterwards, he spent many years drawing and sketching. Roy worked primarily with watercolor in his youth and then started to paint with acrylics on paper. He now works with white conte and charcoal on black ribbed paper. Key people in his life have always guided and supported him. Those people have become the cornerstone for his art. While his main subject matter has been portraits, Roy has expanded his subject matter, as well as styles. |
