April 11-31, 2003
"Caras del Sol" by the 5th Grade Students of Sánchez Elementary School

(under the direction of Cristina Coro, apprentice art teacher, with the help of Lynn Bryant, art teacher)
at Las Manitas Avenue Cafe, 221 Congress Ave

For more than a decade La Peña Latino Arts in Austin and Sánchez Elementary School have produced exhibits featuring the art works of Sánchez Elementary School students. In 1990 Sánchez students began making the popular "Máscaras de los Dioses Aztecas," ("Aztec God Masks") under the direction of Art Teacher, Lynn Bryant. This year, La Peña proudly presents a new exhibit by the fifth grade students of Sánchez Elementary School. Students sculpted clay suns inspired by the Mexican folk art clay suns that come from all over Mexico, and appear in many indigenous cultures. Forty-two students individually hand-crafted relief sculptures from white clay under the direction of Apprentice Art Teacher Cristina Coro, and Art Teacher Lynn Bryant. The students formed the clay, sculpted the designs, and glazed their own sculptures. Ms. Bryant then fired the pieces in the kiln. The results are colorful, splendid, and unique "Caras del Sol" on display at Las Manitas Avenue Café during April 2003.

La Peña thanks Lynn Bryant for her many years of dedication to her students, and to their exhibitions at La Peña. Lynn's nurturing, creative, and sensitive approach to art education has helped to distinguish Sánchez Elementary as the official school of the Austin American Statesman Adopt-a-School program.
