Toma Mi Corazón XII
Saturday, February, 7, 2004

It’s that time of year where love is in the air and no one is immune to it. It’s also the time of year where La Peña invites you “Take My Heart”. Toma Mi Corazón is La Peña’s signature event and annual fundraiser. For the 12th year in a row, La Peña has given out small wooden hearts to artists, school children, and anyone else who would to participate. They decorate them however they wish then return them to be sold in a silent auction.
Hundreds come from far and wide to not only bid on the hearts but to create their own. Former heart artists include Los Lobos, Sandra Cisneros, Bianca Jagger, former Texas Governor Ann Richards, and even President George Bush. Some of this year’s participants include artists Nivia Gonzalez, Cecilia Colomé, and Blas E. Lopez, students from Metz, Sanchez, and Zavala Elementary Schools, and musician Bob Schneider. Funds raised from the silent auction go towards La Peña’s visual art programming, work with children in the schools, and our emerging artists series.
The event kicks off at Las Manitas Avenue Cafe with a preview party starting at 4 pm. Guests can sample foods from a few of Austin’s finest restaurants, enjoy drinks, listen to music from Houston’s Sister Sister, and get an advanced preview and first bids on the hearts up for auction. Then the auction begins at 6 pm and will taking place at La Peña Gallery and Las Manitas. While the event doesn’t take place until Saturday, February 7th, many hearts are already on display.
Tickets for the preview party are
$15 and include admission to the silent auction. Tickets for the silent auction
are $5. For more information,
