For nearly fifty years, The Texas Observer has been engaged in a great adventure: writing about issues ignored or underreported in the mainstream press. Every two weeks, on a limited budget, the magazine provides a view of Texas that is found nowhere else in the state. In addition to sharp reporting on politics and stylish writing on arts and culture, the Observer has also prominently featured the work of Texas artists, cartoonists, and documentary photographers. From May 3 to 31, La Peña is presenting a selection of Observer artwork--"The 21 st Century Observer: A Celebration of Recent Work from Texas Observer Artists, Photographers, and Cartoonists"-- at Austin's Las Manitas Avenue Café.
The exhibit features the work of Austin artists and illustrators Julia Austin, Melissa Grimes, Sam Hurt, Mike Krone, Terri Lord, Matt Lynaugh, Doug Potter, Adrian Quesada, Penny Van Horn; photographers Jana Birchum and Alan Pogue; Dallas-based illustrator Kevin Kreneck; and Marfa artist Gary Oliver.
On Thursday, May 13, Las Manitas will host a reception and fundraiser with Observer editors and friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Las Manitas Avenue Café, 211 Congress Avenue, Austin. Members of Grupo Fantasma will perform.
Suggested donation at the door is $15, but all are welcome.
