In an early celebration of International Women’s Day and Women’s History Month, La Peña is presenting “Relentless Women – Mujeres Invencibles”, an exhibition of artwork featuring 10 renowned Latina and Chicana artists. These artists are Santa Barraza, Cecilia Colome, Cecilia Sanchez Duarte, Nivia Gonzalez, Terry Ibanez, Carmen Rodriguez, Susana Santos, Joanna Silva, Kathy Vargas, and Liliana Wilson. The exhibit will be on display at La Peña Gallery beginning on February 22nd and runs through March 14th. The opening reception will be taking place on Saturday, February 26th from 6-8 pm. The reception will also feature a talk by community and human rights activist Maria Jimenez.
Individually, these women have used their art work to represent, share, and preserve a rich cultural heritage as well as use it as a platform to speak out on important issues facing women and minorities. Many continue to work on their craft despite the fact that creating their artwork is not how they make their living. It is part of their relentless drive that they use artwork as their voice. These artists and other women have continued to voice their struggle on issues such as civil rights, anti-violence, and equal opportunities in education, and in the workplace. International Women’s Day was recognized by the United Nations in 1975, and in 1987, the U.S. declared March Women’s History Month
