"Yohoneza" featuring the artists of Gallery Yohoneza in Oaxaca, Mexico
Opening Reception: Friday, October 10, 2003, 6-8 pm

Days before “Dia de la Raza”, La Peña presents “Yohoneza”, a collective exhibit featuring the work of artists from Gallery Yohoneza in Oaxaca, Mexico. These artists are Herrera Gallegos, Gerardo Bonilla, Hector Pablo, Jorge Sanchez, Javier Arrazola, Hugo Murillo, Santiago Martinez, Rene Almanza, and Luiz Infanzon.
Yohoneza, which means “the traveler” in the Zapotecan language, is about a proposal of six creators from Oaxaca, Mexico. In this gallery, they believe in the importance of the humanistic sense, which should not only include the promotion, but also the presentation of their work. Their affinity lets them offer a novel and original space that awakens an appreciation for the arts for a larger number of spectators and creators. This helps create a better understanding of the plastic message and strengthens the relationship between the public and the artists. Within the diverse art market of Oaxaca, Yohoneza is a distinct project where the public can have direct contact with the artists, thus able to be one who searches and re-creates the nature and society they live in and demystifying the artist’s image as illuminated and elitist one. Yohoneza feeds itself from its own investment. It’s a collective effort, not only from the members of the workshop but also from other people who offer their help in an unselfish manner.
