Día de los Muertos
Our Day of the Dead Exhibit begins on Saturday October 16, 2021, with an opening reception with Artisan Mercado and an art market on Saturday October 30, 2021

We come to that time of the year again! Time to put together the altars with calaveras, decorate with marigolds, and take time in remembering those who have moved on to the next stage in the world. At our curated exhibit you can find some amazing artwork and altars, dedicated to those who have come and gone before us, and celebrate them while they wait for us!

Art is a powerful tool that can be used to convey opinions and messages. As artists we have an opportunity and, for many of us, a sense of responsibility to use our art to bring attention to important issues, to advocate for others, and to advance worthy causes.

This work is a tribute to the brave people that for many reasons take on this dangerous trip.
Dominicans migrate to Puerto Rico via the Mona Passage. Using a small boat called “Yola” is used for these trips, a small distance but because of the currents that converge here make this trip extremely dangerous. Many makes it to the Island of Puerto Rico but many doesn’t.

A younger depiction of the artist sits down in a chair looking at her own reflection, which happens to be of her skeleton.

In the mirror, a panther-like creature lurks behind the skeleton, preparing to attack it as an analogy of death hunting her.

The artist's decision to keep the panther out of the frame and only visible through the mirror's reflection suggests her constant and silent thinking of death and mortality, which has worsened amid the current pandemic crisis and her own health complications.

A heavy, dark cloud of smoke swirls above her head, representing the brain and visual fog caused by the depersonalization and realization the artist has been experiencing for almost a year.

Below her chair, vegetation grows abundantly to convey her fecundity and the peak of her mature years.

However, these are bound to wither as time passes as well, becoming an additional source of anxiety for her.

This print was inspired by the following excerpt of one of the artist's poems:

How can I focus on living
when death is so tangible?

I'm depleted from existing

being alive is exhausting.
