The Other 9-11: Remembering September 11, 1973
Javier Jara Singing Victor Jara
Victor Jara was a Chilean teacher, theatre director, poet, singer-songwriter, and political activist. Shortly after the Chilean coup (9.11.1973), Jara was
arrested, tortured, and ultimately shot dead. His body was later thrown out into the street of Santiago. The contrast between the themes of his songs,
on love, peace and social justice and the brutal way in which he was murdered transformed Jara into a “potent symbol of the struggle for human rights and justice” for those killed during the Pinochet regime.
